Popular dystopian anthology series Black Mirror is confirmed to return for a sixth season.

Netflix released a trailer for the Emmy award-winning series on April 27th, promising it to be “the most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected yet.” Created by satirist and writer Charlie Brooker, the fifth season of Black Mirror aired almost four years ago and was presumed by many to be its last. Famously, a billboard in Madrid announced that the sixth season was ‘Live now. Everywhere’ during the 2020 lockdown.

The trailer showcases a star-studded cast, including Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek), Kate Mara (House of Cards), Rob Delaney (Catastrophe) and Salma Hayek (Frida). Other cast members not included in the trailer are Ben Barnes, Michael Cera, Rory Culkin, Josh Hartnett, Myha’la Herrold and Himesh Patel.

Set to a cover of ‘I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire’, the trailer combines real life and the unusual in typical Black Mirror fashion. A shot of Aaron Paul seemingly on a spaceship is quickly followed by a shot of a girl in a car in the rain; a shop worker slams a customer into a glass screen with brutal callousness; then a bearded Rob Delaney exclaims “Yowzah.” The infamous Black Mirror face appears on the Emerald Pines Diner, as well as on the jacket of a clothes store mannequin.

The trailer encompasses all that is eerie about Black Mirror and looks to be another thrilling, yet disturbing, satirisation of current society and our dependency on technology.

Charlie Brooker stated in an interview with Tudum: “I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people — and myself — or else what’s the point? It should be a series that can’t be easily defined, and can keep reinventing itself.”

The trailer’s tagline ‘You’ve been wondering. You’ve been waiting. You’ve been warned.’ promises a wild ride. Expect it to be even darker and mind-boggling than ever before.

The new season will drop on Netflix in June 2023.
