It’s that time of the year when you hear the same 10 songs on repeat, drink mulled wine and pyjama days are not only welcome, but encouraged.  None of us have had a great 2020 but there is still time to make the most of this festive season. What could get you more into the Christmas spirit than a song with actual sleigh bells? Look no further than girl in red‘s ‘two queens in a king sized bed’.

girl in red is a Norwegian artist known for her lowercase bedroom pop bops. With her debut world in red dropping in 2021 (yet another reason to want to see the back of 2020), singer Marie Ulven has established herself as an advocate for sexuality and mental health discussions. At the age of 19, her first singles ‘summer depression’ and ‘girls’ amassed millions of YouTube views.

Now, girl in red is adding a Christmas track to her repertoire with ‘two queens in a king sized bed’. The beautiful build up involves sleigh bells and a melodic piano riff leading into Ulven’s soft yet strong vocals. The orchestrated piano and violin makes this a delicate track for Ulven, although she is not one to shy away from intimacy. She describes the song’s inspiration coming from, “reminiscing about a Christmas I had with a person I love. When laying in bed glued to their body didn’t feel close enough. When we wanted every second to last forever“. Ulven’s lyrics nail the idea of loving someone so much you just want to squeeze them, “Let me wrap you in with my skin”.

Ulven this relatable idea of nostalgia and longing for loved ones to create an anthem for 2020. ‘two queens in a king sized bed’ is a Christmas song so heartwarming you’ll feel as though your life has suddenly become a John Lewis advert.
