When Wet Leg’s debut eponymous album dropped earlier this year, it seemed to signal loud and clear that guitar music is back, in a big way. The Soulwax remix of their single ‘Too Late Now’ strips away any evidence of the instrument, transforming the song into a punchy and percussive techno banger.
Despite the stark departure in style from the original, the Soulwax remix manages to maintain the same mix of excitement and apathy that Wet Leg excels in. Where the original employs a restless bassline and crashing guitars, Soulwax build a glitchy mass of samples into a thumping techno beat.
The remix brings out the wryness of Wet Leg’s lyricism, something that brought them to the forefront of indie music so quickly. The contrast between the chaos of lines like “Everything is going wrong” and “I’m not sure if this is a song / I don’t even know what I’m saying” and the dry delivery of singer Rhian Teasdale seems more prominent in this musical setting. This contrast re-emphasises what makes Wet Leg so great – and it isn’t just their guitars.
