The Driver Era released their brand new single, ‘Get Off My Phone’. This is the first single release of the year, following their upbeat track ‘Rumours’. Brothers Rocky and Ross Lynch are back with new music in 2024 with their band, The Driver Era. After getting their start on their band R5 with their siblings, the brothers collaborated to bring new music to their fans.
‘Get Off My Phone’ is an exceptional song about heartbreak and anguish in the digital age and a new perspective on how haunting heartache can be.
The song opened with “Finally, I got the perfume off of my sheets,” exhibiting the ex-lover’s evocative presence that they embraced long after the breakup. The verses of ‘Get Off My Phone’ feature softer guitar riffs and vocals, conveying vulnerability, in comparison to the heavy chords in the chorus. The gentle riffs and vocals, contrasting with haunting and poignant lyrics, are what make the song remarkable and unique. The duo puts on a facade that they are moving on, but the verses are very telling. This genius contrast only highlights the brother’s gift of storytelling, lyricism, and creativity.
The Driver Era’s transition from gentle chords and harmonies to heavy guitar riffs makes the song even more extraordinary. The pop-rock duo expresses dread over the memories of the love that was once there, as they scream, “Get Off My Phone! Leave me alone! Don’t wanna think of all the ways that we were wrong!” It is not just the memories and the ex-lover that are haunting them. It is The Driver Era who can’t seem to let go of the lasting reminisces of the relationship.
The Driver Era struggles to remove the traces of the love story, as they check their ex-lover’s social media, which is an accurate representation of dating in the 21st century. This transition captures how heartbreak can lead you into a permanent state of grief. The song moves to a softer verse, as The Driver Era sang, “Face down, I hit the concrete, and started to bleed,” then back to the chorus. The constant swaps from soft vocals to guitar riffs highlight their inability to move on.
‘Get Off My Phone’ is a phenomenal single to enter the new year of music with. This serves as a magnificent catalyst for their year in music, including the upcoming release of their fourth album, which is yet to be announced.
