Indie-rock giant Phoebe Bridgers has released a cover of Bo Burnham’s ‘That Funny Feeling’, with all proceeds from the song going towards Texas Abortion Funds. A live favourite of Bridgers, Burnham’s pop-culture soaked track shakes off the tweeness of the original, replacing it with something much more sinister.

Bridgers replaces Burnham’s conversational tone with a brooding heaviness, slowing the track down to a tear-jerking tempo. While this slow speed makes ‘That Funny Feeling’ meander on for a little too long, it gives the clever lyrics space to breathe, giving each wry observation a new weight.

Midway through the track, the slow guitar strum makes way for a lumbering drum beat, infused with country strings and radio samples. When she sings “But it’ll be over soon / You wait”, it feels like the happiest Bridgers will get, but even here, the radio-effects distance Bridgers from the words she is singing, marking this outro apart from the rest of the song. Phoebe Bridgers might sound optimistic, but she goes to great pains to show us that this isn’t how she feels.
