As the UK enjoys its best weather of the year, Dope Lemon have fittingly released a track made for the summertime. Whilst we may have a couple of months to wait yet, Angus Stone does his best to bring the feeling of sultry summer evenings forward with the release of ‘Sugarcat’, a synth-laden, laidback, mid-tempo track.
Jangled guitars intertwine with synth keys that create a shimmering quality while a steady beat underlines Stone’s insistent, almost spoken-word vocals. The vocals themselves are deliciously typical of a Dope Lemon track, ever so slightly seedy but tongue-in-cheek. Stone croons through the chorus: “Trying to get you to the moon, let’s hit the road / Gonna dance up in your room ’til we can’t no more”.
The track is fitting of what previous singles ‘Electric Green Lambo’ and ‘Golden Wolf’ have suggested that forthcoming album Golden Wolf will sound like. It is no great divergence from previous albums but that should come as no great surprise or disappointment to long time Dope Lemon fans. With a release date of May 2nd, we can hope to enjoy the full body of work under the sunny skies that it has been intended for.
