Track Review: Springworlds // Inventions

Formed as a collaborative side-project for old friends Matthew Cooper of Eluvium and Mark T. Smith of Explosions in the Sky, Inventions formed in 2013 after a successful collaboration on the track ‘Envenom Mettle’. Taken from the upcoming album Maze of Woods, ‘Springworlds’ is an almost entirely instrumental piece that gradually explodes from your speakers, building and expanding like a sunrise. The entire track sounds like the growth of something new.

Whilst the basis of ‘Springworlds’ is quite electronic, there’s something overwhelmingly natural about the track: it’s easy to picture sunlit woods or an expanse of crashing ocean accompanied by this eruptive yet somehow soothing piece. Inventions’ US record label Temporary Residence think that the band ‘”have created their own tiny, wondrous corner of the world”, and it’s easy to see why: ‘Springworlds’ calm fire is like a closely held secret waiting to erupt – right from that tiny, wondrous corner.
