Following the release of her successful debut album, Collapsed in Sunbeams, Arlo Parks has released a highly anticipated single titled ‘Softly’, marking her first music project of 2022 much to the joy of her fans.

The first few opening notes of the song resemble the calming slower-toned sound that consumed much of her Collapsed in Sunbeams. The tune however quickly picks up into an upbeat melody, backed with what resembles a trumpet-esque sound throughout the majority of the track.

The lyrics themselves are repetitive yet catchy, with lines like “Break it to me, break it to me, break it to me / Break it to me softly, I don’t want no one else”, making up a large proportion of the song. This method of line repetition may not be to everyone’s taste. However, rather than this playing to its downfall, the cyclical nature instead makes for a cheery song which is pleasantly easy to listen to. Following some of the emotive pieces coming off her last album, ‘Softly’ acts as an airy and refreshingly light tune to listen to.

‘Softly’, overall, is a simple single which is guaranteed to act as a musical pick-me-up. To those perhaps looking for a song holding more complexity, judging by Parks’ previous works, she is sure to soon release additional projects that won’t disappoint.
