Track Review: Puddles // Josie Proto

Josie Proto has made 2020 more bearable because her debut EP, Pub Songs Vol 1 is full of hooks; it is littered with songs about escapism and minimalist production. This works very well because they bring feelings of innocence and vulnerability. It’s one of my favourite EPs from this year because the upbeat melodies are extremely positive.

Proto has also built up her reputation through her viral song ‘BTEC Lily Allen’. It received millions of views on TikTok, while Lily Allen herself liked the song as well. She has released a new song recently, titled ‘Puddles.’

From the moment you hear the opening B chord, you’ll fall in love with ‘Puddles’. The song is a love letter to youth. The way Proto recalls memories of her younger self is so heartwarming and honest. This is evident in one of the catchiest choruses of the year: “I want to jump in puddles and dance in the rain / I want to get into trouble and be told off again.”

One of the most poignant lyrics is in the chorus: “Let’s just be children because all the adults seem to be bored.” It shows we should hold onto the things that make us happy. ‘Puddles’ is a brilliant follow-on from Pub Songs: Vol 1 and I cannot wait to see what Proto releases next.
