Track Review: Poem // She Drew the Gun

‘Poem’ is a new track to come at us from Merseyside-based band She Drew The Gun, who are set to release their debut album, produced by James Skelly of The Coral, in April. They have received praise from BBC 6Music DJ Steve Lamacq, the Liverpool Echo’s Peter Guy, and Getintothis.com’s Martin Waters.

‘Poem’ – to be blunt – is wonderful, and unafraid to make a statement. The lyrics go from sounding alone and isolated to being angry and defiant at the current state of society, culture and politics. Plus, there are so many lyrics in such a relatively short space of time, the song is crammed so full of ideas, some of which are absolutely brilliant (‘How long till they build a wall and call it a private city?” is superb). It’s comparable to the Manic Street Preacher’s ‘Motown Junk’ in substance, while sounding completely different musically. It’s deceptively soft and soothing despite the righteous, cold anger of the lyrics.

Overall, ‘Poem’ is absolutely amazing. It’s a statement of the times we live in and I, for one, will definitely be keeping a lookout for She Drew the Gun this year.
