Track Review: Perfect Me // Blossoms

Blossoms, Stockport’s biggest indie export, have released the first single from their anticipated fifth studio album, Gary.

Though perhaps most known for their 2016 hit, ‘Charlemagne’, Blossoms have been rocking since 2013, and to date have four studio albums under their belt. Though they have not added any awards into the mix as of yet, they have enjoyed wide-scale success in the indie scene, as exemplified by their nominations for both Best British Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards and Mercury Music Prize respectively back in 2017. The big question now is whether their upcoming release will catapult the band to new heights, with their first single from the record providing an insight of what to expect.

Commencing with electronic, ‘80s inspired synth-pop sounds, the song quickly changes the pace into a Springsteen-esque catchiness. Overall, the track highlights the band embracing their classic, playful indie-rock style rather than their experimental side, as exhibited through their 2022 genre-blending release, Ribbon Around The Bomb. Further, despite its upbeat and uplifting sound, which emphasises the importance of life’s simplicities in striving for personal perfection—such as “show your friends empathy / make more time for family / go somewhere you’ve never been”—it emerges as an ironic commentary on societal views of perfection and unattainable ideals.

An energetic and snappy tune, complemented by its humorous and down-to-earth music video, the track showcases Blossoms in all their glory, while showcasing new, unmistakable musical influences that offer an exciting glimpse into their forthcoming artistic endeavours.

Blossoms’ fifth studio album, Gary, will be released on September 20th 2024.
