Track review: Open My Door // Alice Phoebe Lou

Alice Phoebe Lou is back with the intimate song ‘Open My Door’, anticipating her upcoming LP. The young and talented artist reveals this new single about self-love, focused around how difficult it is to take care of oneself.

In her well-known indie and folk style, she makes an intimate and mature confession. This ‘open door’ could be her soul, her heart, the most inner part of herself, or a safe place that more for others than for herself. This song, then, seems to be a sort of reappropriation of this safe space before others can use (or mis-use) it. She sings: “I’m taking back all the pieces of me / that were taken unwillingly”. 

The track strives for a different approach to life, “a new kind of living”, where she tries to create safety for her body and spirit, “smiling on the inside”. According to the singer, it was in limbo for decades, until recently she found the lyrics to complete it, declaring its a conversation with her inner child. 

A feeling of protection emanates from the track. This, combined with the relaxed atmosphere of the single cover, shot by Andrea Ariel, that shows Alice sitting in a bright forest, fits the song into a comfort zone; the right piece to listen to when we want to feel protected and unharmed.

‘Open my door’ is a single from a new album which will be released soon. In the meantime, Alice will be on tour, starting in Cape Town before touring over the US.
