Track Review: There is Nothing Left // The Drums

The latest single from The Drums’ 2014 album Encyclopedia is a typically slick and melodic offering from the New York duo. With the band now back to just the two original members, singer Jonny Pierce says the pair wanted to “make songs as grand and majestic as we want them to be” with this record.

So despite telling the story of a heart unable to feel love for someone, ‘There Is Nothing Left’ is initially somewhat upbeat, thanks to the dreamy combination of psychedelic guitars and 80s inspired synthpop. But the melancholy feel of the track soon surfaces, the yearning vocals and lyrics, “We walk through the fire… just to die” are an embodiment of everything you’d expect from the band. In short, if you’re looking for a wistful indie pop sound typical of The Drums, this track is for you.
