Track Review: Mug // Elephant Memoirs

Elephant Memoirs are a three piece band from Newcastle with an incredibly unique sound. They could easily be compared to a mix of Biffy Clyro and Queens of the Stone Age due to their original instrumentation.

Their recently released track, ‘Mug’, starts off with a heavy-metal sounding guitar riff, but when accompanied by the other instruments becomes much more melodic. It’s not all the time that a heavily distorted guitar can sound so melodic, but this band is able to pull it off perfectly. The lyrics are additionally emotive, “Then I’ll sink my teeth into its heart,” front man, John Aspinall, sings.

Another part of the song which I found interesting was an acapella section – this really makes the song stand out. This is then followed by some feedback from the guitar before all of the other instruments come back in to finish the song. I was expecting a guitar solo somewhere in all of this, but it’s not the hugest loss as the melodic distorted guitar is heard at different parts of the song in the background.

Elephant Memoirs are certainly ones to look out for. You can follow them on Twitter, and listen to their music on Soundcloud.
