Track Review: Marie Antoinette // Eloïse

Eighteen year-old newcomer Eloïse sings with an air of grandeur and maturity not typical of your average A-Level student. Having only entered the music scene last year, she has made waves with her soaring debut single ‘Studio 54’ and received praise from the likes of The Line of Best Fit and The 405. Taken from her EP of the same name, ‘Marie Antoinette’ – the latest track and accompanying video from the Suffolk songstress – matches up to the passion and opulence of its namesake herself.

It would be hard to listen to Eloïse’s latest single and not draw comparisons with Lana Del Rey. From the airy vocals, vintage aesthetic of the video and lyrics like something straight out of a soft grunge blog on Tumblr, her influence is clear. The track’s dark disco beats and downbeat vibe blend lo-fi and electronica, in a tongue-in-cheek ode to depictions of women in love and their reduction to blindly devoted pawns of their lovers.“When you died for him, did it hurt?” she laments in her echo-laden tone, creating an ever-present sense of unease even past the climax of the song. The accompanying visuals for ‘Marie Antoinette’ give an injection of drama to already intense track, in the style of a gaudy 70s housewife parody.

You can catch Eloïse live at Paper Dress Vintage in Hackney, London on 23rd August.
