Track Review: Marching Orders // Editors

There are many an artist that Editors could be compared to; unmistakable echoes of Interpol, Elbow and Bloc Party ring throughout their latest track ‘Marching Orders’, but the latest offering from Stafford five-piece is still most definitely original.

Paired with an eerie, epic video in stark monochrome, directed by Rahi Rezvanis, who continues his artistic collaboration with the band from ‘No Harm’, ‘Marching Orders’ is haunting both aurally and visually. Tom Smith’s singular vocals ring out above unnervingly repetitive synths and guitars, joined by ghostly melodic harmonies as this 7-and-a-half-minute track builds to a burning crescendo of a chorus. ‘Marching Orders’ presents itself as a song of the downtrodden as Smith sings “I will fall with the rain, I will flicker with the flame” but, in the strangest way, it is oddly uplifting. The repetitive instrumentals and constantly growing dulcet ascensions have a spark of determination in them, a glimmer of hope behind the melancholy, and that is precisely what makes this track an excellent one.
