In 2019, Four Tet rebuilt Nelly Furtado’s ‘Afraid’ into the clunky, tech-house stormer ‘Only Human’. His latest outing, under the KH moniker, is ‘Looking at Your Pager’ – a gem in the veteran’s gauntlet and one that festivalgoers across the globe have been in hot pursuit of.
‘Looking at Your Pager’ originally debuted at Lost Village last year. According to Hebden, he wanted to make something “upbeat”, “positive”, and “futuristic” as the world started to look past COVID-19.
The four-on-the-floor, garage-inspired clanging of Hebden’s recent output is present – and so is an alien-squeezed sample of 3LW’s ‘No More (Baby I’ma Do It Right)’.
While the AutoTune’s soft saturation slightly distorts the vocals, it is immediately soaked in a bright reverb and passed through a smorgasbord of hyper pop-sounding synths… ergo, a grimy glitterball of fun.
The track, which was released via Ministry of Sound, is underpinned by dub-flavoured bass-lines and tail-ended by jubilant chimes and crisscrossing keys.
Four Tet already has an illustrious career behind him but there’s always space for another dance this summer.
