Starling‘s latest single gives the immediate impression of carefree, charismatic rock – but closer examination reveals a track that is carefully crafted and brilliantly emotive. Driving guitar riffs and the passionate vocals of Daniel James give ‘Lights’ the feel of a genuine stadium anthem, with the instantly memorable chorus a particular highlight.
The band have talked the talk about their “refusal to be put in a mould”, and while the self-produced, self-styled nature of their work undoubtedly allows them an unusual degree of autonomy, it’s also clear that they are distinctly aware of just what is needed to achieve commercial success.
Catchy riffs, a powerful string section and a sing-along chorus means ‘Lights’ is not as far removed from the mainstream as some of Starling’s other tracks. However, it is immediately accessible and immaculately executed, and is sure to draw some well-deserved attention to their debut album Dream Again, released last month.
