Track Review: Lights // Hurts

Upbeat synth pop combined with yearning vocals culminate to form ‘Lights’, a single released from Hurts‘ recent album Surrender. The Manchester duo, comprising Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson, have taken their new album to fresh, uplifting heights, and no track reflects their new direction more so than ‘Lights’. “Do you know what it feels like to dance alone? / Do you know what it feels like?” laments lead singer Theo, whilst exultant guitar riffs and joyous keyboard melodies from Adam intertwine to create an indie masterpiece.

Although juxtaposing evocative lyrics and buoyant music is no revelation in the field of electro-alternative pop, Hurts truly make it their own. It is a tune to have on constant replay, and twirl around your room to in a spontaneous fit of exuberance. Clear influences from 80s new wave can be found, with reminisces of Daft Punk and Prince. ‘Lights’ is a marvellously crafted song, and a fine addition to Surrender.
