Newly surfaced from the depths of the indie-rock scene are Colchester-based quartet, Surge. Forming in April of this year, Surge have justifiably already built up a high presence within their local community and future expectations of where the band may broaden their influence next are high.
Their new B-side ‘I Don’t Know What You Think About Love’ is well deserving of the title, a short but sweet track. Without jumping into comparisons and influences of the band and their sound in too much complexity, a clear correspondence can be brought up between it and that of The Vaccines’ early work. ‘I Don’t Know What You Think About Love’ kicks off with an instant rush of guitars and constant high tempo along with ‘feel good’ drum beats throughout.

As the name suggests, the track is somewhat of a ‘chase song’, with a generous helping of corny lines thrown in to add to its happy-go-lucky theme. An example of which is “I’m Jackie Chan, and I’ll kick your ass” or even “I’m Gok Wan, you’re an hour-glass”, both of which aren’t your standard indie fare. This may be an insight into why Surge have succeeded in building up a presence in such a short period, and as to why many are interested in what they will bring about next.
If you are part of the crowd intrigued by Surge and their sound and want to experience more of what they have to offer, check out their new single ‘Loveblood’ released in September.
