After releasing the critically acclaimed fourth album Sempiternal back in April 2013, Bring Me the Horizon widened their fan base and received mainstream attention. This was demonstrated by the rockier track ‘Drown’ crashing into the UK Top 20 and a sold out show at Wembley Arena. Building on a subtle but effective marketing campaign, BBC Radio 1 premiered a new track, ‘Happy Song’ on Sunday night.
The track opens up with a pummelling riff and gang vocals shouting “S-P-I-R-I-T / Spirit, Let’s hear it”, which are prevalent throughout the song. These infectious elements along with the upbeat chorus make the track suitable for arenas, while the squelchy synth is fresh and interesting. Lyrically, it is about how singing helps reduce depression, enhanced by frontman Oli Sykes screaming, “So let’s sing a little fucking louder”, along with a feel-good breakdown and solo.
A new album is anticipated for later this year; and if this is an indication of how it will sound, then you’re in for something huge.
