Two weeks ago, Colchester four-piece The Castro’s released their first track, ‘Give Me The Key’. It’s difficult to describe this slightly strange (but altogether cool) entity, but they can essentially be summed up as a mid-70s, Eric Clapton-esque kind of sound, with liberal helpings of Stones and Hendrix influences. Plus, of course, a sprinkle of Communist imagery, as their name would suggest.

There may be Soviet posters scattered all over the group’s Facebook page, but the content of the track is anything but. Fitting nicely with the murky bass-line, the lyrics of ‘Give Me The Key’ are sex-fuelled – “I don’t mind how much you make me blush / as long as we are makin’ love”. It’s suggestive, but fun at the same time; it opens with a conversation between band members, then subtly bright chords. Whether the Communist image has deeper meaning, or is just an affectation, remains to be seen. But in the meanwhile, The Castro’s have made a very strong start musically, and we look forward to hearing what else they have to offer.
