As the former frontman of one of the biggest British bands of all time, Liam Gallagher is someone who requires little introduction. Almost a decade after the death of Oasis, and just a few years after the demise of the rather under-whelming project that was Beady Eye, Gallagher’s debut solo record As You Were was released in 2017, impressing long-term fans and new listeners alike.
Following up the record’s success with a string of tours, festival headlines, and the release of a second album, Why Me? Why Not in 2019, Gallagher has returned with a new track, ‘Everything’s Electric’, the first single from his upcoming LP C’mon You Know.
Driven by stomping guitars and brimming with typical Gallagher swagger, ‘Everything’s Electric’ (which was co-written with Dave Grohl, of all people, who also provides drums on the track), is reminiscent of some of the better tracks from Oasis’ later albums.
There isn’t a whole lot of progression throughout the song, with the track following a pretty simple structure; there’s no real solo or particularly climactic moment. The drop-out of the drums and emphasis on the vocals at the start of the chorus, however, does allow for a somewhat anthemic atmosphere, and it’s easy to imagine the words being belted out by fans. There’s certainly no denying that Gallagher’s voice has vastly improved over recent years, with his vocals sounding pretty on-par with his singing in the early 2000s.
There’s nothing original about the sound, but Gallagher never claims that his style is anything out of the ordinary. Speaking to Q Magazine back in 2019, he likened his music to a Sunday roast, stating that “as an idea, it’s been mastered”; but there’s no harm in wanting to create the best possible version.
Some tracks from Gallagher’s solo career have slightly missed the mark and inevitably suffer from being perpetually compared to Oasis and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. But like on songs such as ‘Come Back To Me’ and ‘Now That I’ve Found You’, Liam hits form with ‘Everything’s Electric’, with the track joining the ranks as one of his stronger solo efforts. It’s pure dark-fruits-and-bucket-hats stuff, but that’s all part of the fun.
‘Everything’s Electric’ pretty much does what it says on the tin. It’s hardly going to revolutionize music, but it’s decent, enjoyable, and definitely quintessential LG. If you’re going to one of Liam’s gigs at the Etihad Stadium, Hampden Park, or Knebworth this summer, this track will definitely get you excited.
Liam Gallagher’s upcoming album C’mon You Know will be released on 27 May 2022 on Warner Music UK.
