Track Review: Dye My Hair // Alma

2021

Alma is an up and coming singer-songwriter from Finland. Stuck in an era populated by manufactured pop singers, her strong, powerful voice helps her stand out from the crowd, aided by her refreshingly honest lyrics. She is aiming to build on the path set by fellow Scandinavians Lykke Li and Zara Larsson with the release of her debut EP, Dye My Hair. The title track itself could have two meanings: a longing lust for someone, or a criticism of stereotypical body standards.

Backed by some beautifully smooth production, ‘Dye My Hair’ could also be a reference to Alma being strong and independent. This is reflected in the lyrics “I was raised to be free / got my independency” before conceding that she falls weak for the other person. Both the chorus (‘I would dye my hair blonde for you’) and the crisp, summery production are equally memorable and infectious, which could give her mainstream appeal and see her onto bigger things in the future.
