49th & Main return with a new single after the release of their EP, Must Be Nice, in July. ‘Believe in Love’ celebrates life and offers us a taste of jazzy electro-pop.
Borrowing samples from ‘We’ve Got To Believe’ (Darnell, Fernando, Simonelli), 49th & Main have upcycled this classic track infusing ‘Believe In Love’ with anthemic beats and soulful harmonies. O’Sullivan and King crochet a combination of synth, saxophone and samples together to prolong the last spritz of summertime perfumed in the air. The distorted vocals throughout create a haunting flame around which the piano, drum and saxophone dance. O’Sullivan’s skillful ability to create cohesion between the instruments is striking while the other half of the duo, King, glows on vocals: “It’s all about love / When it takes over / The life we live / The love we give / The coldest shoulder.” Love reigned throughout the pandemic and was a constant. It was an era during which we had to stick together and 49th & Main remind us of that as they craft their lyrics and bring emotion to the forefront. ‘Believe In Love’ is a celebration of what we have achieved and what is yet to come. They worked with videographer Aaron Fahy to pair ‘Believe in Love’ with a trippy video bursting with visuals.
As we dredge towards the dark winter evenings, 49th & Main have created the perfect dance track filled with nothing but harmonious joy. All those hours spent mixing and experimenting just off of 49th & Main St. in Vancouver has certainly paid off as they are well and truly on the road to stardom.
