The Script, an Irish band that never seems to get old, ever since ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ fans across the world have loved their music and are sure to feel the same about their newest single ‘At Your Feet’, which is the latest song from their seventh album called Satellites. Just like the objects that circle the Earth, the singles in this album seem to be trying to cover the full circle of experiences in love and ‘At Your Feet’ is the one where the first sparks of love turn into commitment and a relationship.

Throughout the song, the melody and sound is crafted so that it follows the ups and downs of the story. As the relationship blooms; the rhythm changes to mirror it. It all starts off gentle and slow as lead singer Danny [O’Donoghue]’s voice flows over the soft drums to create an almost lullaby quality. This is the persona taking slow, tentative steps into romance. Saying that he will “try my best”, these lyrics demonstrate the vulnerability that you have in love. It might even scare the persona when, eventually — if we’re following the path of a relationship — it must get more serious and the music must step it up too. The melody swells with the introduction of some guitar and a more embellished beat morphing the song straight into a strong love letter right in time for the chorus. It is almost as if we are right with the persona just as they release that they are properly, madly in love. This expanding of a loving relationship is symbolised through the shift in the type of metaphors used in O’Donoghue’s lyrics but crucially not what those metaphors all stand for. Religious imagery, “You’re the church where I was blessed”, becomes geographical, “The north that’s true is always you”,  but both demonstrate the growing appreciation of a lover. However, the change from using theoretical ideas (like religion) to physical ones (like stars) does hint at the increased understanding and closeness that enters a relationship as it progresses.

Love is grand and exciting, particularly at the start, and that’s what this song recognises so well; even in the lyric video where the band are shown standing in front of a grand view of a city mirroring the spectacular nature of love. We feel as if we are standing at the edge of a great new beginning just before love and in this song The Script are helping us take the first step into it.
