Filipino-English pop-rock singer beabadoobee and Icelandic-Chinese jazz songwriter Laufey have paired up in their newest single, ‘A Night To Remember’, a sultry, jazzy love letter to an unforgettable night.

The song opens to decadent piano notes, with Laufey’s voice setting the scene: “Swore I’d seen you before.” The two describe an intimate meeting with a stranger that leads to a one-night affair, where, at the end of a passionate night, the female protagonist chooses to walk away. Laufey shared that they aimed to write a song that broke stereotypes: “There are so many songs about being rejected as a woman and this song is about being on the other side of the coin – having one great night then walking away.”.

Despite this, the song’s storytelling can be limited – inevitable, with its short running time – and can feel one-dimensional. Like the subject of the song, it is a captivating experience that doesn’t last for too long but leaves the other party wanting more.

The two singers’ voices fit the song surprisingly well, for two artists in distinctly different genres, beabadoobee with pop rock and Laufey with jazz. Although the sound is more reminiscent of Laufey’s work, the classical, cinematic style of the song is a refreshing addition to both their discographies.

Overall, the song is sweet and explores uncharted musical territory for the two young artists.
