10) Heaven Sent/Hell Bent
While Steven Moffat may have made some very questionable decisions in terms of Capaldi’s characterisation of the Twelfth Doctor (sonic sunglasses, electric guitar, wearing a hoodie, and the flashcards), he really pulled it out of the bag with this two-part story, almost redeeming himself for the terrible choices he made. Peter Capaldi has never been better as The Doctor than in these two episodes, and his performance, and the level of fear and tension in the Hell Bent side of the story is absolutely incredible. Heaven Sent also features one of the most heart-breaking farewells to a companion, with the surprise twist at the end being that The Doctor cannot remember Clara sending me into hysterical sobs. It was the perfect way to end what was arguably one of the strongest seasons of Doctor Who to date.
