7. You Were Always the One // The Cribs
It’s all in the song title: you were always the one. An ode to the stupidity (and promiscuity) of the narrator and how desperate he is to assure his special someone that they are, indeed, his one and only, flaws and imperfections gone amiss: “And I know I needed some time alone / And I know I never seem to pick up the phone…” One of the simpler, back-to-basics Cribs songs, it features some of the Jarmans’ most enticingly witty and clever lyrics from their back catalogue, a possible tongue-in-cheek love letter dipped in heavy satire. It is devastatingly entertaining as it is devilish, featuring lyrics of a terribly cunning nature that, well, hopefully seem to have their heart in the right place. “And though you will see me with someone else / you were always the one.”
