Petals
Hole threatens to “tear the petals off of you and make you tell the truth” in the final track from Celebrity Skin, and the penultimate song from this list. Co-written by Love, Eric Erlandson and Billy Corgan this track is full of siren like melodies and 60s inspired guitar riffs. ‘Petals’ serves to highlight Hole’s strength as a group whom are able to follow a concept, in this case the destruction of innocence as “all the lillies bloomed and blossomed / wilted and their shivering”.
Hole, have often critiqued the culture of inequality within the music industry as well as the world. However, on ‘Petals’ they highlight how inequality can impact the innocent as “all the darling buds of May, fall without sound” and indeed make the innocent question their own worth. The feedback at the beginning of the track, evokes the crash of ocean waves which serves to draw you into ‘Petals’ and after you’ve listened to it once, you’ll want to hit repeat until it consumes you.
album or in a playlist…in essence the most eminently listenable song of 2016 – My wife now hates it.
