Best Sunday Dress
Included as a B Side to the single ‘Celebrity Skin’, ‘Best Sunday Dress’ was never featured on any Hole album despite being performed in their 1995 MTV Unplugged set. A much mellower and almost orchestral Hole number, the backing vocals of Mellissa Auf De Maur shadow Love’s own vehement vocals. This leads to the creation of an overall ghostly atmosphere,as they once again emphasis that beauty does not entail happiness; “I put on my best Sunday dress / and I walked straight into this mess of mine.”
‘Best Sunday Dress’ is the lost little gem of the entire Hole catalogue, capturing the group at their lyrical and musical best, some may argue. Hole convey anguish and vulnerability rather than outrage – “All the poison and pain and I take what is mine” – and deliver it practically gift-wrapped to the listener.
album or in a playlist…in essence the most eminently listenable song of 2016 – My wife now hates it.
