3. Rebellion (Lies) // Funeral (2004)
Much like ‘Windowsill’ with its anti-establishment connotations, ‘Rebellion (Lies)’ differs in that it is racier, noisier and angrier. The delightfully frenzied roar of “LIES, LIES” throughout the song begs to be shouted along with whilst the powerful single drumbeat, mirrors the heart that beats throughout this alternative anthem.
Now, I like playing music loud(ish) in my car but for ‘Rebellion’ I have spent many a journey, windows wound down, yelling ‘LIES, LIES’ at confused pedestrians (eyes on the road of course) with the volume at full. ‘Rebellion’ does this to people. The rather inspiring lyrics of “Sleeping is giving in/ no matter what the time is” add to the idea that this song is itself fuelled by motivation. Performed live, the crowd (like myself in my car) growl the refrain back at the frenzied band members on stage.
