The shortlists for the 2020 Tony Awards have been announced, with Alanis Morissette’s musical Jagged Little Pill leading the way with 15 nominations.
Jagged Little Pill was inspired by Morissette’s 1995 album of the same name and is one of only three shows nominated for Best Musical.
The limited number of nominees is reflective of the difficulty of 2020 for theatre, with Broadway theatres shut since March. Many awards categories have fewer nominees than usual, with the Best Musical Revival category having no nominations.
Moulin Rouge! was nominated for 14 awards, with the show’s star Aaron Tveit the only nominee in the Best Leading Actor in a Musical category. The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film opened on Broadway in July 2019.
Tveit said he was ‘beyond grateful, elated and honoured’ that his work has been recognised.
The ceremony was originally due to take place on the 7th July. The date for the rescheduled ceremony has yet to be confirmed, but is expected that the awards will be presented virtually in early December.
