‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ by English glam-rock four-piece The Darkness was released in September 2003 and reached Number 2 in UK Singles Chart. Despite the song being almost 12 years old, it is an immensely catchy piece that seems to never become outdated. The extremely uplifting, feel-good melody coupled with Justin Hawkins’ fun, wacky vocals makes this song virtually impossible to dislike. The song features bright, catchy lyrics that one can’t help but scream along to whilst mimicking Justin’s silly but fabulously high-pitched voice, and has one of those choruses that nearly everybody seems to know the words to. The song also boasts impressive, upbeat guitar riffs that can become stuck in the listener’s head for days.

Furthermore, the music video for this song does not disappoint and matches the marvellously eccentric feel that the song radiates; throughout the video The Darkness are shown performing on a spaceship and fighting off the occasional alien and monster (oh, and a giant crab). ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ has an extremely happy feel to it, and one just can’t sit still whilst listening as the upbeat, cheerful tune simply makes you want to tap along, or even get up and dance. The fact that The Darkness are a band that obviously do not take themselves too seriously provides a brilliant breath of fresh air, which makes the song even more enjoyable.

‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love’ is a thoroughly entertaining and fun song that seems to have the rare power of putting a smile on people’s faces which is why it’s our ‘Throwback Thursday’ this week.
