Throwback Thursday: Don’t You (Forget About Me) // Simple Minds

As the soundtrack to John Hughes 1985 bratpack film The Breakfast Club and more recently rejuvenated in the soundtrack of Pitch Perfect, Simple Minds’ ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ is a classic track with the capability to ensure a mass sing-along whenever it is played.

It’s a great song with an interesting back story; Simple Minds weren’t the first choice to record the song, Billy Idol and Bryan Ferry declined first – a move which Idol would later regret, cutting his own version of the track in 2001. The track, not written by Simple Minds, overshadowed their own musical efforts but came to dominate their setlist thanks to the impact The Breakfast Club had across the world. It’s simple song, with simple lyrics “la la la la la la”, making it hard not to echo the words of Jim Kerr even the first time you hear it.

An enduring song, popularised by an ever-relevant movie about the struggles of growing up, ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ seems the perfect track for this week’s Throwback Thursday.
