The 76th annual Tony Awards have announced the dates for 2023 and have revealed that the ceremony will be held in a new location.
Whilst historically the event has been held in the Radio City Music Hall, it will now be taking place at the United Palace Theatre in Washington Heights, in the north of New York City. This is a smaller venue, moving from 6000 seats to 3400 seats. The Tony Awards have only been held away from Radio City Music Hall five times since 1997.
In order to be eligible for the Tony Awards, shows have to have officially opened on Broadway before the cut-off date of the 27 April 2023. The nominations will be revealed on 2 May 2023, with the awards ceremony taking place on 11 June 2023. The first part of the event will be broadcast on Paramount Plus, whilst the majority of the ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS.
President and CEO of the American Theatre Wing Heather Hitchens and president of The Broadway League Charlotte St Martin, said in a statement: “We are excited to bring the Tony Awards to the historic United Palace for the first time. As we celebrate the best of this Broadway season and 76 years of the Tony Awards, we look forward to ushering in a new golden age for the show from this majestic, golden age theatre.”
