The BBC’s much-loved legal drama The Split is set to return for its third and final series.

Nicola Walker and Stephen Mangan will reprise their roles as Hannah and Nathan for one last case, as they aim to settle their own divorce.

The Split follows the lives of the Defoe sisters (Nicola Walker, Annabel Scholey and Fiona Button) in the ruthless world of London’s divorce circuit. With intangible lies, deceit, and drama, we last saw the lives of Hannah and Nathan in heartbreaking scenes as the divorce lawyers’ own marriage came under attack. We join them ten months on as they go head-to-head to unpick their 20 year-old relationship.

The final series sees Hannah face “what she is about to lose. However, a shocking revelation dramatically changes the stakes. And, as the battle-lines are drawn, their dream of achieving the ‘good divorce’ is left in tatters.”

Undoubtedly fans of the series will be disappointed at the prospect of this series being the last, especially as series two became the third most watched BBC drama on BBC iPlayer in 2020, with over 6 million views and more than 19 million streams.

However, writer Abi Morgan said “It’s great to be back writing for the Defoe Family, and to dive once more into to the complications of their lives and those of their clients. In the final series of this bittersweet trilogy, Hannah faces the heartbreak of her own divorce, and the fight to save her family and her marriage. Siblings clash, past mistakes are exposed, and hearts are broken as Noble Hale Defoe notches up more billable hours in the divorce capital of the world.”

Upon her return to the series, Nicola Walker said, “I can’t wait to be back in the Defoe Family, we are all looking forward to the journey Abi has planned for us. I don’t know if Hannah will cling to the wreckage or walk away, but I do know it’s going to be a fantastic ride.”
