If you’ve been lucky enough to avoid one, the trailer for Mark Mylod’s latest project,The Menu, will give you a glimpse into a dystopian dinner party from hell.
The trailer for The Menu focuses on a couple, played by Nicholas Hoult and Anya Taylor-Joy, who travel to a private island for a luxurious meal for twelve. In scenes that are reminiscent of The White Lotus, where darkness permeates the idyllic paradise as wealthy people frolic, our diners discover that the meal they paid $1,250 for (smugly pointed out by Hoult’s character) isn’t the Instagrammable meal they first thought it would be.
The Menu, directed by Mark Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones and What’s Your Number?), will also star John Leguizamo, Judith Light, Janet McTeer and Paul Adelstein.
Ralph Fiennes’ chef character commandeers a team to create a story via a supper in what is essentially a bunker. “The game is trying to guess what the overarching theme of the entire meal is going to be, you won’t know until the end” Hoult’s character helpfully states. However, the meal takes a dark turn. The guests soon find themselves having to run off the very dinner they’ve just imbibed in a quest for survival.
Taylor-Joy’s character is the clear outsider here, as the non-foodie sighing and rolling her eyes at every turn. “I have to know whether you are with us, or with them” Fiennes’ character queries her.
The film promises plenty of surprises. After all, as Fiennes’ character implores, “This is what you’re paying for.” The Menu will be served on 18 November.
