The CW is attempting a third Supernatural spin-off series; a prequel that will centre on Dean and Sam Winchester’s parents.
The new iteration of the series, named The Winchesters, will be executive produced by Supernatural star Jensen Ackles and written/executive produced by Robbie Thompson, who also executive produced the original show.
The Winchesters will be the epic, untold love story of how John Winchester met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world. It will be told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (reprised by Jensen Ackles).
Jensen and his partner, Danneel Ackles, executive produce through their company, Chaos Machine Productions, which is housed under Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind Supernatural. Warner Bros. Television will also be producing The Winchesters in association with Chaos Machine.
Supernatural, which ran for 15 seasons and ended last Autumn, told the story of brothers Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) who hunt demons, ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural beings. The brothers’ parents, John and Mary, were originally played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith.
However, Jared Padalecki will not be having any involvement in this prequel and there was some contention on Twitter about this as it appeared Padalecki was not aware of the project until it was announced by Ackles on Twitter. Jared Padalecki said that he was feeling “bummed” at being blindsided by Ackles and Thompson.
This caused some confusion and fear amongst the fanbase, with many hoping that Padalecki was joking with them and Ackles. Padalecki quickly responded that there was no joke and that he was truly “gutted.”
Luckily, the tension didn’t last for too long as the two actors had a heart to heart later that day and resolved the situation.
The CW have attempted to launch a Supernatural spinoff twice before, with Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters both being introduced as backdoor pilots. However, both never ended up moving forward.
Now, The Winchesters, the CW’s third attempt at a spinoff, has a script commitment but time will tell whether it will go forward and what the show’s future could be.
