Cowspiracy (2015)

This documentary shows Kip Andersen’s research into the effects of the meat and dairy industry on the planet. People that are not vegetarian or vegan may dismiss this documentary, expecting to be preached to. However, he does not start as a vegan, making the narrative a little more relatable.

Like many people, Anderson was already taking the steps to live a more sustainable life: recycling, using less water, cycling to work. Yet the documentary focuses on his discovery of the often unexplored dangers of the meat industry, and how this may require sustainable steps too. What is particularly shocking is the way in which environmental charities did not address this, or even share any statistics about it.

In the years since this was released, more information has been released from charities about the meat industry, and thus, it is slightly dated. But it is still so important to watch, as you’re guaranteed to learn more about sustainability and food consumption. Even if you’re not interested in becoming vegan, what’s the harm in learning a bit more about why some people choose to?
