Show Pony // Orville Peck – Jaimie Kay

Released: 14 August 2020

Orville Peck is a rising star, an openly queer country and western singer who wanted to break the mould. He did that and he did it fast. Not only is Peck a masked singer – which is camp in and of itself – but he also has a mysterious past that few know about. He has worked as an artist before for a band that he will not say. His works have a melancholic tone but also a sense of power and faith behind them.

The EP Show Pony is his second release and is a little more upbeat compared to his first (2019’s Pony); something we all need in 2020. It has a very traditional sound that combines the campy nature of old country and western like Dolly Parton with the raw power of great artists such as Johnny Cash. He also collaborated with the great Shania Twain, that’s a good draw to have on only your second album.

Orville Peck sings about love, love that is unheard of in old country and western. Through his use of Gresch guitars and his band he creates a familiar sound that is also oh so contemporary. He also gave a shout out to Leeds when he came for his tour so I am a little biased in that respect.
