Last year, streaming giant Netflix announced that a Scott Pilgrim anime series was in the works. The show’s teaser trailer dropped on 16 August 2023, adding more anticipation.
The series is backed by Bryan Lee O’Malley (the original creator of the comic) as writer and producer and Edgar Wright, director of cult-favourite Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, as producer. Netflix is set to release the series later this year — 17 November 2023, to be exact.
This initial teaser is gloriously colourful and jam-packed with images heavily reminiscent of O’Malley’s iconic Scott Pilgrim graphic style. The trailer opens with Scott’s band ‘Sex Bob-Omb’ as Kim Pine (Alison Pill) on drums introduces the group. We see a host of familiar colourful characters come into frame throughout the teaser, including: Stephen Stills (Mark Webber), Knives Chau (Ellen Wong), Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera), Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Lucas Lee (Chris Evans), Gideon ‘G-Man’ Graves (Jason Schwartzman), Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha), Envy Adams (Brie Larson), Todd Ingram (Brandon Routh), and Julie Powers (Aubrey Plaza). It seems an immense feat that Netflix, Wright and O’Malley have been able to reassemble such a star-studded bunch of actors to return to voicing their roles, adding further anticipation for the project.
From the short trailer, it appears as though the animated series will follow a similar structure and narrative as the books and film, as opposed to continuing his story through a new narrative arc. It seems to include near-identical scenes to that of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, however, the show’s new title indicates that it may have more to offer fans than they already know from either the book or film universes. Many fans may be wary of this, considering the cult followings of the books and films. However, with the return of the motion picture’s original cast, Wright, and O’Malley, they should rest assured that Scott Pilgrim seems to be in safe hands.
