The Tattooist of Auschwitz TV series is set to be released in 2024, based of course off of the infamous book by Heather Morris. It was recently announced that Oscar-nominee Harvey Keitel will join the cast.
Morris’ international bestseller tells a harrowing story based on the life of Slovakian Jewish businessman, Lale Sokolov, during World War II. Not only is it a historical marvel but there is a fierce love story at the heart of it all, with Sokolov falling for a girl that he had to tattoo, hence the name of the book.
Following the success of the novel, there has been constant chatter of film and television adaptations and one has finally come to fruition thanks to Sky Atlantic.
There are already a number of familiar faces set to star, including The Last of Us star Melanie Lynsky and rising star, Jonah Hauer-King, but the latest announcement is by far the biggest. Oscar-nominee Harvey Keitel is set to feature in the new series as Lale.
Keitel is best known for his work in films directed by Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese and Wes Anderson. He has featured in no less than six Scorsese pictures, including Taxi Driver and The Irishman. In addition, he also plays Mr White and the Wolf in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction respectively, two cult-classic Tarantino films.
Whilst the man in question will play an older version of Sokolov, his younger self will be portrayed by Jonah Hauer-King. He featured prominently in Amazon TV show The Flatshare, as well as having credits in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and World on Fire. The Londoner has a big year or two ahead of him as he also plays Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid, which will hit cinemas next month in the UK.
It will be fascinating to see how this series plays out as the resurgent Melanie Lynskey is in line to star as the author herself, Heather Morris. Keitel’s character will be telling his gut-wrenching story to Lynskey in an intriguing twist of events.
The book itself has received backlash over the years due to claims of historical inaccuracies but all the while, this TV series is steaming on ahead. The Tattooist of Auschwitz is currently in production, therefore no release date has been set.
