Square Enix, the Japanese video game conglomerate behind franchises such as Life is Strange, Dragon Quest, and Final Fantasy, will reportedly move away from platform exclusivity.
In a new interview with 4Gamer, one of Japan’s largest video game websites, Final Fantasy series producer Naoki Yoshida confirmed they would be looking to move away for future releases. In an interview promoting FANTASIAN Neo Dimension, the producer said, “In the future, Square Enix titles will be released simultaneously on each platform more and more…”
This will be exciting news for fans of Square Enix’s franchises such as Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy 16 was released on PlayStation 5, in June 2023 with the proclamation the game would be a PlayStation 5 exclusive for at least six months. The game was eventually released in September of this year. Similarly, this year’s Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, released in February, is still exclusive to PlayStation 5 with no news of other platform releases at the time of writing.
Yoshida’s comments follow the news earlier this year that Square Enix will “aggressively pursue a multi-platform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs.”
