The upcoming and currently untitled 2021 Spider-Man 3 film will see the return of current cast members Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori and Marisa Tomei. Rumoured to join them are many other big names from the original Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man films.
The film will be directed by familiar face Jon Watts, and is written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who co-wrote Far From Home. The third actor to play the hero, Tom Holland (who has been in the role since 2016) will reportedly be joined by previous webslingers Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone are also reported to return in their roles of Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy.
Alongside these three ‘Spider-Men’, previous nemeses are also joining the all-star line up. Alfred Molina is returning as the tragically villainous Doctor Octopus. Molina’s stand-out performance of Otto Octavius in 2004 brought with it a love-hate relationship for many fans. Jamie Foxx will also be returning as Electro, which means the MCU is combining villains from all three generations of Spidey.
Benedict Cumberbatch will also appear in the film as Doctor Strange, however it has not been revealed how significant his role will be yet. The final moments of Far From Home saw Peter Parker’s identity revealed to the world. In the comic series, Parker turned to Doctor Strange for help when this happened, and so perhaps Cumberbatch’s role will be linked to this event.

The rumours of cast members keep growing. The Illuminerdi published an exclusive article earlier this week stating that Willem Dafoe (Green Goblin) and Thomas Haden Church (Sandman) are currently negotiating deals to join the film. Further rumours talk of both Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Tom Hardy’s Venom joining the franchise.
The most likely answer to the combination of these actors is that the film will mirror the recent animation Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, providing a multi-verse breakthrough. In the original comic series, Spider-Man’s enemies eventually team up with one another to try and beat him as a collective force – perhaps this is the inspiration behind the upcoming project. Many fans are speculating the idea that the film will feature the Sinister Six to take on the ‘Spider-Men’.
