Song of the Week: I Do What I Love // Ellie Goulding

‘I Do What I Love’ is easily one of my favourite tracks from Ellie Goulding’s new record, Delirium, released on 6th November. The album is utterly glorious on the whole, but this particular track stands out amongst the crowd.

Showcasing a hard-edged vibe, reminiscent of M.I.A’s ‘Bad Girls’, the song is vastly different from anything else Goulding has produced in the past. “Because I was born free / I ain’t taking shit” perfectly sums up the defiant message that the lyrics uphold, enforced by Ellie’s almost angry vocals. The track features a heavy use of synth, creating a wholly electronic sound to the finished result; her vocals have also been toyed with to further implement the otherworldly feel to the song.

Despite coming from an album that consists almost entirely of electronic instruments, ‘I Do What I Love’ really pushes the boat out and manages to distance itself from the other tracks on the album with its much more aggressive sound, further expanding Ellie’s seemingly endless capacity of talent to create something really special.
