Single Review: The Way Up // BRNS

Four-piece Belgian multi-instrumentalist project, BRNS recently dropped their latest contribution to the alternative music scene. ‘The Way Up’ is a brooding, genre-blending track which seems to perfectly epitomise the group’s musical dynamic as a whole.  Centred on the idea of growing up and old, the track seems to waddle, off-kilter, into the light. An undulating electro sound is expertly overlain with a collection of percussive effects, heady baselines and haunting synthetic intrusions which fade in and out of focus.

Eerie, indistinct falsetto vocals introduce themselves as an integral constituent of the instrumentalism of the track. While lyrics aren’t the centre of attention in the piece, the vocals provide a gorgeous melodic frequency, and allowing you to disregard their heavy repetition. Peppered with a huge variety of instrumental components, from pattering percussion to swift guitar riffs and heady 80’s-esque synths, BRNS have once again delivered an extraordinarily unusual musical platter for your perusal.

BRNS play Electrowerkz in London tonight – if you can’t make it down, check out their Facebook for other tour dates.
