Single Review: Ursa Court // Twin

Twin is a Brighton-based indie rock band. Their single, ‘Ursa Court,’ released only a couple of weeks ago on Youtube, is an exciting presentation of their sound. The drums propel the song straight from the start, while the husky lead singer sings wonderfully clever melodic lines as the song develops increasing excitement, until the build up to the first chorus, where it descends into anticlimax as the sound of the backing instruments drop to allow for the guitar solo. However, this is not a downer as it is implemented very cleverly to complement the climactic second half of the song; the song powers on, maintaining and substantialising its exciting and refreshing structure and ideas, constantly changing.

The vocals get huskier and more agonising, singing lines such as “You make me feel like an infant that’s teething” in a wonderfully tasty, visceral manner. The multitude of riffs and motifs in the song are succinct, similar to those of a Joy Division song, but less mature, more chaotic, more unhinged. The song as a whole is fresh and exciting, a great introduction for those who haven’t listened to the band before.
