Standing at 5.23 minutes long, Officer’s self-proclaimed “oddly titled single” ‘My Darling Defibrillator’ is an epic saga from start to finish. The Glaswegian singer-songwriter – who also goes by the name David Logan – couples his poignant lyrics with purposeful melodies, making him the male retort to Florence Welch, of Florence + the Machine fame.
There’s reference to Milton’s Paradise Lost in the opening lines, showcasing the intelligent song-writing that’s behind this track. The vociferous chorus “I find my head in my head, find my heartbeat” is assured, full of emotional brevity and depth; and when this is coupled with the resolute drumbeat, it makes for truly immersive listening. The rawness Logan obtains in his music, as well as his sampling of noises which add to the overall sense of drama, is reminiscent of Stornoway in ‘Between The Saltmarsh and the Sea’, as well as Damien Rice’s album 9.
‘My Darling Defibrillator’ is from Officer’s forthcoming debut album entitled Myriads, set for release on 31st July.
