Single Review: Bungalow // Al Bairre

After almost a year-long wait, Al Bairre – South Africa’s young up-and-coming indie sensation – have released a brand new, highly anticipated single: ‘Bungalow’. It took them a while to get to the studio on this one, however they played it at numerous gigs in the last six months, and I had the privilege of seeing it live at Rocking the Daisies last year.

The song begins with a rarely used technique these days – a symphonic keyboard riff which gave the intro a strangely ’80’s feel which blends smoothly into Al Bairre’s signature energetic, instrumentally-dense style.

Nic Preen’s husky vocals overlay the music wonderfully, while the Johnson twins’ supporting melded voices provide a strong female backbone to the track. The twins’ alternating lines in the bridge add a fresh, delightfully unusual element. The song certainly lives up to the band’s previous work and sets a strong foundation for their – hopefully – upcoming EP.
